Milton vs. Collins Hill: Battle in Atlanta

December 11, 2021

Milton, GA- As the weather gets colder and the days get longer, only one thing is on the mind of the city of Milton: a state championship. Playing for a state championship is where all those early mornings, hot summer days, and late nights are spent to prep the Milton Eagles for a successful season. After compiling a 13-1 record and breezing through the playoffs, Milton has earned their spot to play for the coveted state title.

On Saturday, December 11, Milton will travel down to Center Parc Stadium where they will take on the 14-0 #3 ranked nationally Collins Hill Eagles. The last time Milton made the state championship was back in 2018 in a scenario much like this one. Milton’s opponent Colquitt County came into the state championship riding a perfect 14 game winning streak with a top 10 national ranking in hand. As many can remember Milton gave all Colquitt could handle and beat them 14-13 to capture the school’s first-ever football state title. Milton will have yet another daunting task ahead of them this week against Collins Hill.

Collins Hill Impact Players

QB Sam Horn (Sr.)- 291 completions, 3447 passing yards, 573 rushing yards, 39 total touchdowns, 113 QBR

ATH Travis Hunter (Sr.)- 1124 total yards, 66 receptions, 19 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, 11 total touchdowns

TE Ethan Davis (Jr.)- 61 catches, 755 yards, 8 touchdowns

Collins Hill will be making a repeat visit to this year’s state championship after losing in this game last year to Grayson. Collins Hill has run through everyone on their schedule with the closest game being a 37-22-point win over Greenville Christian (Mississippi). Not only is this Eagles team one of the most talented teams this year but might be one of the most talented teams in the history of Georgia.

Leading the Eagles offensively is Senior quarterback Sam Horn. Horn is rated a four-star prospect committed to Missouri. Against Grayson, Horn completed 24 passes for 230 and one touchdown. Additionally, Horn rushed for 99 yards on 8 carries and scored once more.

Senior running back Spenser Anderson had 14 carries for 92 yards and one touchdown. Senior running back Ryan Stephens had 10 carries for 49 yards.

The main attraction around this year’s Collins Hill team is receiver Travis Hunter. Hunter is rated as a five-star, #1 overall prospect in the class of 2022, he is heading to Florida State. Against Grayson, Hunter had eight catches for 75 yards and one touchdown. Junior tight end Ethan Davis is a four-star with offers from Arkansas, Florida State and Cincinnati. Davis finished the night with seven catches for 89 yards. Davis also went down in the game with a wrist injury, it is unsure if he will be able to play this week. Coby Rodgers had three catches for 36 yards.

Collins Hill’s defense just might be one of the best defenses in the state only giving up 5 points per game. In addition, Collins Hill has only given up 75 points through 14 games. Collins Hill’s defense is led by previously mentioned 5-star athlete Travis Hunter.

Milton Impact Players

QB Devin Farrell (Sr.)- 145 completions, 2088 passing yards, 936 rushing yards, 35 total touchdowns, 113 QBR

RB Jordan McDonald (Sr.)- 172 carries, 1537 rushing yards, 29 total touchdown

S Robert Billings (Jr.)- 67 tackles, 5 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery

Milton’s game plan for Walton last week was much of the same as it has been for the entire season. Ground and pound the ball early then open the passing game to quickly and swiftly put the other team away. After going down early 10-0, Milton was able to force a couple of key plays to quickly go on a 52-0 run.

Making his last high school start is Senior quarterback Devin Farrell. Last week Farrell completed five passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. Farrell also rushed on eight carries for 61 yards.

Senior running back Jordan McDonald will also be making his last high school start. Against Walton, McDonald rushed on 18 carries for 155 yards and four touchdowns. Junior running back Scott Moskowitz saw six carries for 65 yards and one touchdown.

Senior receiver Brooks Bortle led the Eagles in receiving with two catches for 56 yards and one touchdown. Senior tight end Jack Nickel had two catches for 31 yards. Senior receiver Adam Freas had one catch for 18 yards.

Milton’s defense played a tough game and did all that was required by forcing turnovers and pressuring Walton’s quarterback. This week the defense will have a huge test ahead of them to limit the damage that can be done by a powerful Collins Hill offense.

Senior linebacker Owen Pauley played a great game with 13 tackles, one forced fumble and one sack. Senior linebacker Zyere Horton made 11 tackles and one fumble recovery. Junior linebacker Caleb Moran made eight tackles and one interception. Senior linebacker Dylan Miller had two tackles.

Junior defensive lineman LT Overton made six huge tackles and two tackles for loss. Senior defensive lineman AJ Crawford had four tackles and two sacks. Junior defensive lineman Owen Phillips made three tackles. Senior defensive lineman Giles Tchio recorded one tackle.

Junior safety Bryce Thornton had six tackles. Junior safety Robert Billings recorded four tackles and one interception returned for a touchdown. Junior cornerback Brayden Holmes had three tackles and one interception. Senior cornerback Cam Canion made two tackles and two tackles for loss.

Keys to Victory: Collins Hill

Offensively Collins Hill will just need to get the ball to their playmakers and let them do the damage that they have done all year. Collins Hill will want to quickly put Milton away and not allow them to get any hopes for winning. Defensively, the Eagles will need to shut McDonald and Farrell down from running the ball and force Milton to beat them with the pass.

Keys to Victory: Milton

Execution is key for Milton in this game. Collins Hill might be the more talented team but Milton’s depth is unmatched. Milton will need to control the clock and run behind McDonald and Farrell. Then once Collins Hill is tired, open up the playbook and score. Defensively Milton will need to keep Hunter and Horn in check and limit the big plays. If Milton can accomplish these tasks, they just might secure their second-ever state championship.

Score Prediction

Collins Hill/21

Offensive Player of the Game: Jordan McDonald

Defensive Player of the Game: Bryce Thornton
