Milton vs. Life Christian Academy: Revenge Game

September 1, 2021

Kennesaw Ga- In last week’s game vs. North Cobb everything that could have possibly gone wrong for Milton did. Milton was still in contention for the game, but by the third quarter, North Cobb quickly put away that hope. Malachi Singleton and company was just too much for Milton to handle especially with his record-setting performance. One exciting play was the fake punt executed by Jordan McDonald who ran for 40 yards into the endzone tying the game at seven. With that loss, Milton falls to 1-1 on the season.

Looking forward to this week, Milton welcomes the Eagles of Life Christian Academy (3-0) from Virginia into the annual Freedom Bowl. The Freedom Bowl has been kind to the Eagles with them winning their last three contests in the series. The Freedom Bowl is a great event that is much bigger than the game of football. The Freedom Bowl prides itself on military appreciation and remembrance. Milton will need a big win in this game to stay on track.

Life Christian Academy Impact Players

QB Dorian Fleming (Jr.)

WR Akim Sledge (Sr.)

S Kaleb Spencer (Jr.)

Life Christian Academy is a prep school based out of South Chesterfield Virginia. LCA is loaded with Division One talent on both sides of the ball. LCA plays a modified schedule meaning instead of playing the typical region games, they only play non-region games with many being against out-of-state opponents.

Leading the Eagle offense is Junior quarterback Dorian Fleming. Fleming is a dual-threat quarterback with a good arm and an even better running ability.

Running the ball is Freshman Michael Dabney Jr. Dabney Jr. has already received offers from Maryland and Virginia. Dabney Jr. uses speed more than power to create big, explosive plays.

Akim Sledge is LCA’s leading receiver. Sledge is rated as a three-star recruit with offers from Maryland, Nebraska and Boston College. Sledge utilizes his speed to blow past defenders and catch the ball. Deonte Hill is the next receiver in LCA’s system. Hill is another speed receiver and only adds to the Eagle’s dangerous passing game.

On the defensive side of the ball, LCA has many playmakers. The first big name is Junior safety Kaleb Spencer. Spencer has received offers from Penn State, Maryland and Boston College. Spencer plays fast, physical and always looks to make a big hit. Senior defensive lineman D’Andre Martin is listed as a three-star prospect and is committed to Virginia Tech. Martin is a big body lineman with great strength to rip through the offensive line. Overall LCA has a very talented defense that plays hard and plays for each other.

Milton Impact Players

RB Jordan McDonald (Sr.)- 18 rushes, 194 yards, 1 touchdown, 10.8 yards per carry

TE Jack Nickel (Sr.)- 6 catches, 79 yards, 13 yards per catch

LB AJ Crawford (Sr.)- 19 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack

After Friday night’s loss, Milton is thirsty for a big win against a powerful opponent. Milton fell to #46 nationally and #7 in the state on MaxPreps. It goes without saying that the Eagles must execute better than last week to win this game. Regardless of past events, it’s a new week that brings new opportunities.

Making the usual start this week is Senior Devin Farrell. Last week Farrell completed six passes for 70 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Farrell had 41 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Senior running back Jordan McDonald had 17 rushes for 114 yards and one touchdown. Junior Bryce Thornton rushed for 23 yards on seven attempts.

Last week’s leading receiver was Senior Jack Nickel. Nickel had two receptions for 17 yards. Junior Bryce Thornton had two receptions for ten yards. Sophomore Debron Gatling caught one ball for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Milton’s defense had a very uncharacteristic game that included letting up 40 points, 75 passing yards and 238 rushing yards to North Cobb. Hopefully, the correct adjustments were made in practice and the defense continues its role of shutting teams down.

Leading the Eagles in total defense is Senior linebacker, AJ Crawford. Crawford had ten tackles and one tackle for loss. Senior linebackers Owen Pauley and Dylan Miller combined for 12 tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack. Junior linebacker Caleb Moran had eight tackles

Leading the defensive line was Junior lineman Owen Phillips. Phillips recorded eight tackles. Junior edge rusher Wyatt Smalley had five tackles. Senior lineman Giles Tchio had four tackles.

Junior cornerback Bryce Thornton had another big game recording eight tackles, one pass break up and one forced fumble. Junior safety Robert Billings had eight tackles and one pass breakup. Senior cornerback Cam Canion made three tackles and one pass breakup. Seniors Brooks Bortle and Zyere Hornton combined for four tackles.

Keys to Victory: Life Christian Academy

LCA needs a big performance from Fleming and his receivers. Fleming must be on par with his offense if LCA wants to come out with the win. On defense, the Eagles must shut down Milton’s run game, much like North Cobb did. LCA also thrives on momentum plays, so LCA will have to hit the deep ball or force a turnover to crank up the momentum.

Keys to Victory: Milton

Milton must run the ball and run it efficiently. McDonald must get hot and take advantage of LCA’s defense. Passing the ball, Farrell just needs to make throws and let his talented receivers do the rest. Defensively Milton needs to get back to that dominance that they play with so well. Much like LCA, the Eagles need to force turnovers to create scoring opportunities for the offense.
