Milton vs. North Cobb: Battle in Prime Time

August 26, 2021

Milton Ga- There’s a lot to celebrate in last Friday’s win against the Hornets of Hapeville Charter. An interesting stat is in the past three years, Milton has shut out opponents in each opening day contest: a 45-0 win against Alpharetta, a 29-0 win against Johns Creek and last week’s 45-0 win. The first scoring play of the season for the Eagles oddly enough was a safety. After the safety, it was all Eagles from there on out with Milton scoring 45 straight points.

This week Milton will hit the road for Kennesaw to take on one of Georgia’s elite programs: the North Cobb Warriors. MaxPreps has Milton ranked as #3 and North Cobb at #5 in the state. ESPN2 has decided to broadcast this game only adding to the excitement and pageantry that is Georgia High School Football.

North Cobb Impact Players

CB Marquis Groves-Killibrew (Sr.)

QB Malachi Singleton (Jr.)

EDGE Joshua Josephs (Sr.)

Last week the North Cobb Warriors lost to the Buford Wolves by a score of 35-27. It was all North Cobb heading into the third quarter, then disaster struck. Buford was able to force multiple turnovers and score touchdowns allowing them to come out with the win. The Warriors could not be more excited to get their revenge against a top ten and prove to the state that they are the real deal.

On the offensive side, the Warriors have a multitude of threats. Junior Quarterback Malachi Singleton will lead the charge. Singleton is listed as a four-star with offers from UCF, Georgia and Miami (FL). Singleton is a great passer with terrific speed to compliment his arm.

Running the ball is Junior Benjamin Hill. Hill is a strong power runner that runs through tackles and is hard to bring down.

In reports, one of North Cobb’s best receivers, Senior Denylon Morrissette will be out for this week. However, this is subject to change. With Morrissette’s injury Senior Sam Mbake will have to step it up. Mbake is listed as a three-star recruit with offers from Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn. Mbake is a big body receiver that strives on tough to make catches. Sophomore David Eziomume poses a threat in the receiving game with his speed as well.

On the defensive side, North Cobb has a bunch of talent. The top player on the defensive line is Senior Joshua Josephs. Josephs is listed as a three-star with offers from Michigan, Tennessee and Penn State. Josephs is a great speed rusher and breaks plays up. The other top player is cornerback Marquis Groves-Killebrew. Killebrew is a four-star prospect committed to Georgia. Killebrew is a lockdown, ball-hawking corner that uses his speed to his advantage. Senior cornerback Andre Stewart is a three-star prospect committed to Kentucky. North Cobb’s defense has the talent to line up with Milton’s offense and will create a great battle.

Milton Impact Players

QB Devin Farrell (Sr.)- 10-15, 150 passing yards, 1 touchdown

RB Jordan McDonald (Sr.)- 11 rushes, 80 yards, 7.2 yards per carry

CB Bryce Thornton (Jr.)- 1 tackle, 1 interception

Milton finds themselves coming in hot after a shutout victory and an offensive explosion. Milton will need to continue that momentum in practice and roll with into Kennesaw on Friday night. The Eagles will need to keep to more of the same game plan that got them the win last Friday night to be successful in this high-octane game.

Last week Senior Devin Farrell successfully threw for 15 completions for 150 yards and a solo touchdown.

Milton’s offense saw three players running the ball last week. The leading rusher was Senior Jordan McDonald who rushed on 11 attempts for 80 yards. McDonald also had a passing touchdown. Junior Scott Moskowitz had five attempts for 27 yards and a hat trick of touchdowns. Junior Bryce Thornton rushed for 20 yards on four attempts.

The passing game was well spread out utilizing all receivers. The leading receiver was Senior tight end Jack Nickel. Nickel had six receptions for 67 yards. Senior Adam Freas had four catches for 34 yards. Sophomore Debron Gatling caught four balls for 33 yards and an impressive catch for a touchdown. Senior Brooks Bortle’s only catch was a 28-yard touchdown pass.

As I previously said last week, Milton’s defense is one word: Dominant. They have yet to prove me wrong. Allowing no points is by far quite the task, nevertheless, they did it.

Leading the defense was Senior Linebacker, AJ Crawford. Crawford had nine tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. Senior linebacker Dylan Miller made six tackles and one tackle for loss. Junior defensive lineman Owen Phillips had six tackles and one tackle for loss. Junior Linebacker Caleb Moran accounted for five tackles and one pass breakup. Junior defensive lineman Wyatt Smalley made four tackles including one tackle for loss. Senior linebacker Owen Pauley accounted for three tackles. Junior Safeties Bryce Thornton and Robert Billings each had an interception. Thornton’s interception turned into a 90-yard return for a touchdown.

Keys to Victory: North Cobb

North Cobb’s biggest threat is Milton’s stellar run game. If the defense manages to shut that down North Cobb should come out on top. In addition to shutting down Milton’s run game, Singleton must be on point with his receivers against a tough and gritty Milton secondary. The Warriors will also have to hit big momentum plays to give them confidence on both sides of the ball. With this game being played in Kennesaw, this should provide a big boost for North Cobb.

Keys to Victory: Milton

Milton specifically needs to execute on their phenomenal running game with McDonald and Thornton. If the Eagles can run the ball on the Warriors, their defense will break, and Milton can take this game over. On the defensive side, Milton must get in the backfield and make Singleton nervous by getting hits on him. Like North Cobb, Milton also needs to hit big momentum plays. Momentum plays a serious part in big games like this and the team that swings the momentum will likely come out top.
