Milton Basketball Wins State Title
March 18, 2021
Macon, GA- This past Saturday in the Milton Eagles achieved history by winning their third state title ever (2010, 2012, 2021). Milton won by a score of 52-47 against the Patriots of Berkmar. Even local Atlanta rapper, Quavo, had to catch a glimpse of this highly anticipated contest.
After Milton’s devastating loss in last year’s final four, the Eagles were hungry for a state championship. Milton started 2-2 in the first four games, but that quickly changed thanks to a 27-game win streak. Milton’s stellar play in the region earned them a third region title in three years and a number one seed in the state tournament. With the Eagle’s four wins in the playoffs, they secured a spot in the championship game.
The game started relatively slow with both teams settling into the atmosphere of this game. Up until halftime, both teams went back and forth taking leads and tying the game back up. As the third quarter took place it was Berkmar that was able to control the game through rebounds, open shots, and getting to the free-throw line. Towards the end of the third quarter, Milton was able to knock down threes to cut into Berkmar’s lead making it a three-point game heading into the fourth quarter. Milton opened the fourth playing fast and disciplined basketball and quickly took their lead back. One of the more controversial moments in the game took place late into the fourth quarter where Berkmar started fouling Milton with close to a full minute left on the clock. Usually, teams will foul the winning team late in the game to slow the game down and force the opponents to make free throws. Milton’s Kanaan Carlyle was able to knock down nearly all free throws to thrust Milton ahead and secure a state title for Milton.
Once the clock hit zero, all of Milton’s players celebrated and danced on the court as their hours upon hours of preparation and practice finally paid off.
The future looks bright for Milton as their state title and 28-2 record have earned them a spot to play for a National Title in a tournament-style bracket against some of the elite competition from other states. The GEICO National Tournament will be held in the Suncoast Arena in Fort Meyers Florida starting on March 31st and ending on April 3rd. All of the games will be televised on ESPNU.
