There are lots of entertaining online quizzes to help one understand their horoscope through the internet, though they are anything but true and mostly leave the reader dissatisfied. A commonly forgotten topic in astrology is one’s ruling planet and what it truly represents.
The history behind ruling planets derives from the Ancient Roman culture. Thousands of years ago, Romans began to name the days of the week from the visible planets in the sky (and anyone born on that day would inherit the planet’s influential traits). Later on, the Romans moved their calendar to an even larger scale, breaking the planet’s rulerships into the twelve months.
Before telescopes, humans solely knew of planets that were visible to the eye, which included Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn. These planets each ruled two horoscope signs, while the Sun and the Moon ruled their own. But until the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, their calendar was never fully completed.
Fast forward two thousand years… These ruling planets now each tend their own horoscope except for Venus and Mercury, who still share two signs. You and everyone around you has a ruling planet that you may or may not have known about. Based off of your horoscope (or birthday), one can find out which planet influences them.
Starting with the spring Horoscopes, Aries (March 21st-April 20th), has the ruling planet of Mars. In greek mythology, Mars translates to the God of War. Describing Mars as a masculine figure with a tendency to take action and even sometimes with a temper, but with this ruling planet comes lots of bravery and courage.
Some say Aries’ is polar opposite to the signs of Taurus (April 21st-May 21st) and Libra (Sept. 24th-Oct. 23rd) because it is ruled by Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Being ruled by Venus represents a person who flourishes of loyalty and commitment when it comes to the ones you love. Venus’ femininity also shines through one’s obsession with romance and sensual surroundings.
With a ruling planet of Mercury, Gemini (May 22nd-June 21st) and Virgo (August 23rd-Sept. 23rd) share the same planet as well but have some differences. Mercury has always been the planet of communication and intelligence due to him/her being the messenger for the Gods. If yourself or someone you know is ruled by the planet Mercury, they’re influenced to possess impeccable knowledge and tendencies to deliver news and share their opinions with others around them for the better of society. But differences include a Virgo’s path of organization and precision, with lack of imagination, whereas Geminis will thrive in its presence.
Transitioning to the heart of the year, Cancer’s (June 22nd-July 22nd) ruling planet is the Moon. Because the Moon is somewhat responsible for human emotions, [and the ocean’s tidal waves] Cancer’s often can switch up their feelings and are capable of intensely deep emotions. Cancers also have caring and loving personalities which is why people tend to feel closer to their loved ones during summer time!
While the Moon rules Cancer, the brightest star rules Leo (July 23rd-August 22nd). Having the Sun as your ruling planet is as having an endless supply of bright energy. The Sun powers all and everything around us, meaning Leo’s experience an even deeper connection to nature and Earth. Leading your self involvement to give you strength and power to wield your path.
Autumn horoscopes include Scorpio (Oct. 24th-Nov. 22nd) and Sagittarius (Nov. 23rd-Dec. 21st). Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, meaning that those ruled by it are associated with darkness, death and rebirth, due to Pluto being the farthest planet to revolve around the sun. The constant pull between Scorpios and their fascination of mystery and power is never ending, making them one of the strongest zodiacs.
If you are ruled by Jupiter, [calling all Sagittarius (Nov. 23rd-Dec. 21st) signs] this means you are constantly on the move. No matter the circumstance you are always ready to take on the day as a brand new adventure! Jupiter is the planet of balance and good fortune, this ties back to the ancient Roman mythology translation to Zues. Jupiter was the God of all gods, creating a perfect equilibrium between everything.
Capricorn (Dec. 22nd-Jan. 20th), Aquarius and Pisces are all bound by the winter season. Capricorns are ruled by Saturn, they are lovers of responsibility, determination and perseverance. Their love is very rewarding when treated correctly but when mistaken for, Capricorns rarely are ones to forgive. They are self critical and often to not allow mistakes in their work.
On the other hand, Aquarius (Jan. 21st-Feb. 19th) signs are ruled by Uranus. In greek mythology, this planet translated to the God of the sky. All Aquarius signs share the energy with those who step beyond the box when it comes to innovation and originality. They are the true believers behind the skys the limit!
It makes perfect sense when hearing Pisces (Feb. 20th-March 20th) is ruled by Neptune, [The God of the seas] since all Pisces are water signs. Being ruled by Neptune explains why all Pisces you have met are incredibly creative and each live in their own altered reality. While it is hard for Pisces to overcome emotional experiences with others, they are known to be very caring when wished upon.
