On January 26, 2018, director Steven Spielberg announced plans to remake the classic film West Side Story, with Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner set to write the screenplay. Casting director Cindy Tolan released an open casting call on her Twitter account, and is currently seeking actors between the ages of 15-25 for the roles of Maria, Anita, Tony, Bernardo, and Riff. Maria, Anita, and Bernardo are Hispanic, while Tony and Riff are Caucasian. Open calls are being held at the Julia de Burgos Performance and Arts Center in New York City on April 29 and the Spotlight Dance Center in Orlando on May 5.
